People vote based on friendship status, not the character of the person. When someone, for example, applies for admin, people vote if they like the person or not, not if the person would make a good admin. People need to start voting based on the person's character, because character is what actually defines someone. You can be a good friend with someone, but that alone doesn't automatically make them a good admin.
I dislike how people vote

Unfortunately any situation where people vote is going to be a popularity contest whether we like it or not. There is quite honestly nothing we can do about that besides not allowing people to vote (Which isn’t a terrible idea given the right circumstances but that’s a debate for another thread).

This has been changing recently.

You're asking a fucking lot of a Minecraft server largely populated by 13-19 year olds.
From what I've heard about the whole paS system, it used to be easier to get admin if a high ranking staff member liked you. (Don't quote me directly on this I'm going off memory of conversations I've been involved in)

you see, theres this little thing called bias which essentially means that this is literally impossible. Everything in life is a popularity contest when you really boil things down.

if a person has a lot of admin friends who would vote for them, they are 99% of the time going to be a good admin because they have a good enough personality that they would befriend most of the admin team

idk what makes a person "a good admin" specifically but if enough people like a person enough to make an entire admin application thread biased they probably would do good as an admin since they can deal with the community well

I believe Ryan's system for hub mod applications (see the instructions) is a good way to mitigate the main issues about freeop admin applications. I will elaborate in the new application policy draft's discussion thread.

Voting for a positive outcome for a friend based solely on the fact (theyre my friend) is dumb. I purposefully stay away from voting on things regarding friends or people i have grudges against as to not be biased unless what they have done has swayed me away from my bias.
