With 1.18 being at pre-release stage, it is very close to being released for the public. We are still at 1.16.1 and we still haven't fully upgraded to 1.17. Skip 1.17 and upgrade to 1.18 instead so we aren't behind (even though 1.18 is at pre-release, it's still something to think about).
Stop upgrading to 1.17 and upgrade to 1.18 instead

This could have some complications with upgrading the world since Minecraft is picky about skipping versions when upgrading. It would be better to still try to get to 1.17 (which now has very stable Paper builds) first. At this point it seems like we'll never get off 1.16, despite there being every TF plugin for 1.17 at this point
-
↩ Telesphoreo Minecraft 1.18 has much better world upgrading features compared to any other version. Minecraft 1.18 will now actually consider that versions you skipped and will try to optimize. One of the new world upgrading features is called "World Blending" which is proof that 1.18 has much better support for older versions compared to any versions. I can confidently say that you can skip 1.17 and you will be fine.

Why would we skip a step when we're not even done with Step 1?

Idk the community's already easy to anger with trivial issues, one can only imagine what would happen if we accidentally corrupted the worlds because of some weird stuff we did, with no support from Mojang as we didn't play their game as they intended.

TBH we already kind of are, the main thing we had to do with 1.17 was assure that all our plugins were brought to Java 16, however Ryan had the foresight of chosing to go to Java 17 instead, which is better or something (idk much about the diffrences), and geuss what, 1.18 requires java 17, so we are actually already 1 step ahead, iirc the main thing that we still needed to do was add network manager implementation into TFM, but I may be wrong so I'd like to ask @"Paldiu"#89 to talk about that stuff

Java 16 wasn't an LTS Release, so is already out of support and not getting security updates.

That's a separate feature and more around moving to UUID's. The main thing with Java 17 was getting a hand full of plugins updated and everything re-tested, we don't know the work involved to move to 1.17, but I would suggest it still makes sense to step through with 1.17 and then 1.18.

↩ characterslimits Quote from md_5 on the 1.18-pre5 thread:
QuoteAlthough upgrades from between any two version pairs are technically possible, it is recommended that all upgrades are conducted from 1.17.x. This means that you should first upgrade your world completely on 1.17.x using the --forceUpgrade server argument, and then do the same on 1.18.
If anyone knows best, he does

I strongly object; now that 1.18 is out, there have been multiple reports of bad performance caused by 1.18 in some shape or form. Whether it be its new chunk generation or even memory leaks, the problem is the same - it's about as unstable as Kaboom on a Saturday. I strongly advise we wait until 1.18.1 comes out to clean up all the bugs.

https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-243416I appreciate the push to update the server to the very latest version, however we must make sure that the version we're moving to is guaranteed to be stable.

The 1.18 update is scheduled for Feb 2022

↩ characterslimits We are still at 1.16.1
Correction: freedom-01's on 1.16.5
↩ Paldiu I've read on their bug tracker that the world generator is bugged if you're upgrading from a previous version. Simply put, old chunks and new ones don't blend correctly, causing a lot of visual nonsense. A complete re-generation could be necessary.
