I recently discovered how to add custom player heads to the HeadDatabase plugin, so I figured I'd populate it with content from the community. If you wish to contribute a custom skin or player head to be immortalized, this is a pretty good opportunity as I intend to carry them over when we do the 1.19.4 upgrade.

You must provide the head data (namely, the base64-encoded texture JSON), and what you want it to be called.

Pretty much anything is fair game as long as you meet these rules:

    1. The contents of the heads must be safe for work and meet the community guidelines
This one should be common sense, but this is TotalFreedom, where common sense isn't very common apparently.
    2. HD heads are allowed provided that they don't contain any exploits or other nasty surprises
We don't allow 1.16 clients to join, but some may use client-side mods like ViaFabric to join the server. There also exists some mods that allow HD heads to work properly again in 1.17+ again. These are the primary reasons as for why I'm allowing them, because they used to be part of the Minecraft item scene in 2021.
    3. The heads must actually work and can be processed properly by Minecraft itself
If you are submitting a regular skin (that isn't a HD head), you can simply submit a NameMC link and I'll extract the head type from there. Otherwise, provide the NBT for the head itself and I'll manually extract them for you.
    4. The heads must not already be a part of minecraft-heads.com
This would be quite a waste and wouldn't be worth it.

Here are some things to note:

    • HD heads will be put in a separate, dedicated category from the other player heads to keep things organized.
    • If other custom server heads exist with the name you are looking for, a number will be appended at the end for technical reasons.

Here are some ideas for the kinds of player heads one could submit:

    • Decorative textures that could be useful in certain aesthetics
    • Cursed versions of player's skins (e.g. female Lyicx in a maid costume, me without glasses, etc)
    • Skins depicting characters that are an inside joke within the community (e.g. Josh Monaghan, Akefu Raider, etc)

I haven't filed an application like this in literal years and I wouldn't have considered doing this if it wasn't for the circumstances we are in.

    1. What is your Minecraft IGN?

videogamesm12 is my main account both VideoGameSmash12 and StevenOurGod are my alternative accounts.

    2. What time-zone are you in?

    Mountain Daylight Time.

    3. What experience have you got in Infrastructure / Systems administration in general?

    • As a pastime, I actively manage a web server running Ubuntu which hosts files like text files and pictures.
    • Since I love pain, I use Linux as my main operating system (which is a one-way trip on the highway to hell on its own, but it's only further amplified by the fact that it's Arch Linux).
    • As a developer, in the past I literally had to work with the clusterfucked system that was Dev-Freedom-01 and its Fort Knox login system, which despite feeling like I was sticking my dick in a Cheerio every time I tried to use it, I still had enough patience to work with it.
    • To ensure that we had at least some form of backups, I wrote a script that periodically scraped schematics and log files from the HTTPD server on a Windows machine using the scheduled tasks feature and sent the files to a 7z archive.

    4. What experience have you got in Minecraft server administration?

I am currently responsible for updating server plugins, keeping Scissors up to date, and overall keeping the lights on. I have had direct SFTP access under Seth's era and utilized this access to keep the lights running when those who were responsible for doing so gave up.

    5. Why do you want the role?

With our server being so horrendously outdated and with the disk space situation of the server worsening every day, the writing is on the wall: we're running out of time. I want to get involved in any way possible to ensure that Ryan's plan actually goes through, and with Ryan's schedule being as uncertain as it is (not to mention the fact that he also has to manage Mastodon UK, which has practically consumed all of his free time), I am not confident that this will happen unless I take the initiative and do it myself in cooperation with the server's development circles.

However, I cannot do this with the level of access that I have now, because Pterodactyl's SFTP system is quite limited and quite frankly I don't think it would be able to handle the job that I want it to do. I am seeking direct access to Steven's box solely because file access there is much more efficient and it will not throw an error when I try to even view the folder that contains all of the map art data. I'm not even making that one up, this is an exact issue that I face with Pterodactyl.

Furthermore, I am interested in building my resume. Being able to list the fact that I have experience working with the systems we have now would be pretty useful for any future job opportunities that I might have in the future.

As promised in my announcement about updating Essentials, Telesphoreo and I have updated several plugins on the server to much newer versions that aren't from the 1.16 era. Here's some of the plugins that were updated tonight:

    • HeadsDatabase
For nearly 3 years, we were running an incredibly out of date version of HeadsDatabase from at least July 2020. What surprises me is the fact that despite the maintainers of the plugin killing the ancient API that the plugin relied on, through what can only be described as a miracle of epic proportions, the plugin still worked. How this 3 years out of date plugin still worked almost perfectly is beyond me. Regardless, it's been updated to the latest version.
    • Spark
I wasn't even aware this one had updates because it never nagged people about updates and was pretty rock solid, but it's been updated anyways. We hopefully won't need to update it again when we move to 1.19.4.
    • CoreProtect
This one should have been updated, but simply wasn't so it kept nagging admins about it. It shouldn't need to do that anymore.
    • GSit
Now it won't whine about being outdated every time you join the server. At least until tomorrow, when they release the 583th update this week with their changelogs that shout the changes like a madman.
    • ItemizerX
This mainly received some under-the-hood changes that will prepare it for the 1.19.4 upgrade as it supports multiple versions of Minecraft now.
    • OpenInv
Even though this plugin is still severely out of date (which is due to circumstances beyond our control), it's now slightly less out of date.
    • Plan
This one was out of date by like a hundred builds or so. I figured I'd do Ryan a solid and update the plugin for him.

We're looking into updating PlotSquared despite Ryan's plans to start the plot server which has been unfortunately 2 years overdue due to circumstances out of our control. Hopefully we'll fix some of the long-standing issues with that plugin in the process, too.
