  • The matter of right to repair

    The UK recently passed a right to repair law, which is a step in generally the right direction. Upon reading the legislation myself, my politics major brain kicked in and spotted some obvious flaws - namely the unjust protection of major technological companies.


    To start with, the parliament have decided to make a list of all items that fall under the new legislation. It is generally a good list, with washer-dryers, dishwashers, televisions and “electronic displays” all available for right to repair. I immediately found it odd that legislation contained the vague term “electronic displays”, and I was almost certain this was a red-herring. Governments across the world have time and time again used vague terminology to avoid public unrest and is borderline political libel.


    It turns out that “electronic displays” does not cover phones, tablets, laptops, or smartwatches - effectively saving Apple from having to comply with this law. That’s right, powerhouse Apple does not need to comply with parliamentary legislation due to the parliament themselves excluding Apple’s major goods from being affected.


    It’s also worth noting that Apple’s year long argument with certain US state parliaments has also essentially led them to be excluded from their right to repair legislation. They must have some damn good lawyers at Apple to be able to manage this 😂.

    The reasoning for some of these objects is quite absurd.


    An OP enquired about NBT paste, and a week later they applied for admin - and now you’re going to hold that over them.


    That same OP has answered valid reservations with correct responses, and now it’s being turned against them as “saying exactly what we want to hear”.

    I have been very critical of you, perhaps even harsh. That is wholly due to an inherent divide between us - it’s neither of our faults, but rather the situation we have been put in. I however, am not above giving praise where praise is due.


    You are extremely hard working, and I know I can count on you. You’ve been an amazing ECM, and during my tenure as the EMM I couldn’t have wished for a better community manager. Despite my reservations, you have time and time again proved me wrong.


    You would make an amazing senior admin, better than I ever was.

    The issue here is your lack of change and the fact that you keep excusing your rude and toxic nature as your “personality”. You have been banned countless times in the past, for racist jokes, homophobic remarks, Islamophobic jokes; and each time you suggested that it wouldn’t happen again and you would try to be less of an asshole.


    I’m quite tired of vouching on your appeals under the promise that you’ll change, because your track record shows that you often do not change - and that being a dick is just who you are (do we want someone like this around anyways?)


    I’ve had a look and the majority of the vouches on this application provide no reasoning and are treating this appeal as a joke.


    I’m going to change to object because you are still not confident that you will change upon an unban.

    Does this not show that perhaps something needs to change?


    I have seen plenty of Ivan discord appeal threads, and all of them are you admitting your mistake, and essentially telling us that you will do them again because it’s your “nature”.


    I might be missing something here, because this appeal has a lot of vouches - but based on things you’ve said in this thread and in the many preceding this, I am not confident that you will change at all.


    Neutral until I can understand why there are so many vouches (perhaps human sheep effect?)
