The server is now back online after the first maintenance window. Unfortunately, it's not because the maintenance was successful, but because napkin math suggested that it would take over 48 hours straight at the pace it was going at, which is not reasonable. There are some suggested ways to speed up the process, such as rewriting the script to make use of multiple threads.

I was able to use part of the output from this run to get a small reduction in disk space (see the first post), but it is obviously not enough to save the day.

Most people probably don't keep track of how much disk space the freedom server uses, but our worlds are extremely large, to the point where it will start to affect other customers on our host if they keep growing. To make the size a bit more manageable without destroying everyone's builds, @"Folfy_Blue"#356 has written a script that will delete chunks that do not contain any data. Unfortunately, the worlds are so large that this is not something that can just be done during the off-hours, and not one but three maintenance windows have to be scheduled:

    November 27, 2021 at 12:00 UTC:
flatlands (168GB before, 159GB after (stopped prematurely))

    December 4, 2021 at 12:00 UTC:
    world (123GB before, 51GB after)

    December 11, 2021 at 12:00 UTC:
    world_nether (23GB before, 8GB after)
    world_the_end (22GB before, 6GB after)
    adminworld (7GB before, 2GB after)
    masterbuilderworld (5GB before, 2GB after)

    January 8, 2022 at 12:00 UTC:
flatlands, second attempt (167GB before, 122GB after)

The script has been tested reasonably well, but please look out for missing or corrupted builds in the affected worlds after each maintenance. A full backup of each world will be made right before applying the script.

To give some context, advertising other servers ingame was historically allowed once per 10 minutes. This was simply an exercise of the freedom concept: it's allowed as long as you don't harm others, and one message per 10 minutes is strict enough for that. Mark had another reason as well: communities that spawn off of TotalFreedom (i.e. not random spammers) are very likely to lead people back to us just by association, which is actually beneficial.

@"Panther"#54 is the current Executive Marketing Manager. However, his position has actually only been interim so far. In the interest of involving the community, the permanent Marketing Manager will be chosen by vote. If you are interested in the position, simply reply to this thread and explain why you are the most suitable person for it; there is no template.

14 16 days from now, applications will close and voting will be held in a separate thread that OPs can participate in. If there is only one applicant (including Panther), the vote will be yes/no.

And since the Senior window has also opened today: applying for this position and Senior Admin at the same time is allowed.

What this thread shows very well is the massive difference in size between the average high school and the average college/university. There is no reason why you couldn't have small colleges, that's just not how they developed historically.

I am sure that Flarum is great for certain communities, I just think it isn't for ours. Flarum has a design philosophy where it tries to be as minimalistic as possible and leave everything to extensions. However, to replicate the feature set that we actively used on ProBoards, we need so many extra things that it becomes unmanageable.

Unfortunately, there are not enough vouches for this appeal to be approved. I recommend not just seeing the ban appeal as a formality, because what you say in the thread really does influence the votes. You may appeal again in 30 days.

jwmphall That would look very odd because setting it above the default it would essentially place a massive tower of dirt on your plot, obstructing the view of everything around it. However, if that's what you want, you don't need a dedicated command for it because you have WorldEdit.

DragonSlayer2189 Are you sure you are talking about height? Builds are almost never horizontally symmetric.

Vouch, but I think we can just reuse https://forum.totalfreedom.me/t/forum-sanction-requests for this since it is about pretty much the same thing.

Tizz others can’t easily tell if they’re trying to interact with a banned user as only mods and admins can see the “suspended” badge next to the name

I was actually not aware of this. I guess it makes sense in some situations, but apparently this is yet another design choice of Flarum that does not fit our community very well.

man One of the dates I’ve not been able to get is Hanukkah for 2022, as different places on the Internet have different dates. If anyone who celebrates Hanukkah could get the date it would be really helpful.

I do not celebrate Hanukkah, but in 2022 it's from 18 to 26 December.

@'FT ' if so, then it might be a good idea to allude to major events in the community, like the server’s birthday. you’d have to be really picky though, because memes die and players become irrelevant very quickly.

I don't think the memes and players were ever up for serious consideration. Real world major holidays should be safe, and the server's birthday is also relevant enough.

The following sentence has been removed from Executive Ban Manager:

    Quote

Due to the nature of this role the individual will be issued with Forum and Discord administrator privileges as they may be required to collate evidence and review various appeals / ban statues throughout our network and various communications channels.

This is mostly for the sake of limiting permissions where access is not strictly necessary. Of course, I am not trying to cripple any future Ban Manager: the second paragraph above still says that they will have sufficient access to enforce and apply (and therefore review) bans across the network, and they will still be able to work with the Admin Officer to investigate complex situations.

Almost 1.5 years ago, Wilee created a suggestion on the ProBoards forum to overhaul the ban system. As Wilee does, it was a bit of a wall of text, but here it is in its entirety:

Why does it matter that Wilee suggested this before? Because it was actually approved, with 29 out of 34 votes. It was just never implemented, and so much time has passed now that I think a new vote is needed.

The idea was simple: instead of having permanent or indefinite bans, all bans would have a finite length. Admins would be able to issue bans of up to 24 hours like they do now. But instead of requesting indefinite bans, admins would be able to request long-term bans that last several weeks or months. The requester and the commenters would all be able to suggest lengths, and the Ban Manager would make the final decision. Appeals would work the same way as they do now, but voters will have to take into account that the user can also wait it out.

One important point is what would happen to our current indefinite bans. My suggestion is to make all of them last until 6 months from now. That will be too short for some people and too long for others, but it is simply not doable to go through all of them one by one. We also have two other types of bans on the indefinite ban list, namely unappealable bans and self requested bans. Those would remain the same as they are now.

A small thing is that we don't have a Ban Manager right now. I am currently handling indefinite bans as the owner, but if this suggestion is implemented, this task will be handed over to a new Ban Manager.

Tozzit I think security is the biggest reason against open source. Its easy to get information out of something you know all the ins and outs of, but not something that you don’t know what it is that you’re facing.

This view is known as "security by obscurity" and is widely rejected by security experts. The most popular secure algorithms are considered secure because they have been scrutinized by thousands of experts and none of them have managed to break them.

characterslimits You are correct, but what the article doesn't discuss is the willingness to pay when the software can also be obtained gratis. No one has ever gotten rich selling libre software.
