DragonSlayer2189 which is better or something (idk much about the diffrences)

Java 16 wasn't an LTS Release, so is already out of support and not getting security updates.

DragonSlayer2189 iirc the main thing that we still needed to do was add network manager implementation into TFM

That's a separate feature and more around moving to UUID's. The main thing with Java 17 was getting a hand full of plugins updated and everything re-tested, we don't know the work involved to move to 1.17, but I would suggest it still makes sense to step through with 1.17 and then 1.18.

      characterslimits Why is this?

Because it's been a horrifically buggy experience for us since the start... The beta versions were not reliable and made upgrades so painful, and upgrading out of beta to the mainline release was a pain as well. It's been a horrific experience, and it is one of the most difficult pieces of software to upgrade I've had the misfortune of dealing with. It gives no route to automatically upgrade add-ons (Which you have to install if you want a functional forum suite) in line with the base software, so you have to lock the forums down, disable all the add-ons, upgrade Flarum, then prey to whatever god you worship that the plugins have been updated and will work with it, and when you upgrade all the plugins and enable them and flarum crashes, you spend a few hours disabling them all and re-enabling them one by one to figure out what's crashed or what combination has, because it has no decent debugging tools.

Tizz and move to any other platform

We started, it got pulled when we started to just not have a player-base any more. It's something I want to re-visit next year, but given it's not a simple / quick thing, we do realistically also need to see an increase in the general community to really justify any significant effort being put in. But that is a different issue.

As video said, I have attempted to add the flarum recommended addon for private messaging and it failed every time.

I'm not inclined to put more work into this issue given how many hours have been spent to date trying to resolve this.

Telesphoreo Yeah, my current guess is we'll have to use CoreProtect / similar for "Manual" block changes, and FAWE's built in one for FAWE related changes. Far from ideal but I'm not sure there's a better option, FAWE is something that we really do need if we can get it.

I will look to see if there is other patterns out there, but so far the only thing I can find is "Use the FAWE Native one or it's a big fat no"

characterslimits You have chosen to ignore my actual point, and put words and infer statements that I did not make. I've made my point, Flarum is a crappy piece of software, I've outlined why, you've chosen to nit-pick it and ignore the context behind those points, and you've decided that you'd rather suggest what I mean by them instead.

The entire software suite has been nothing but a buggy piece of crap, you want me to stop complaining about it, I'm afraid it's too late. They made a poor piece of software that I've had to make work for TF, and I've hated every fucking second of it.

If you want to have an actual conversation about why Flarum is a piece of shit, don't go to the trouble of taking me word by word and tell me why I'm wrong, because you ignored the majority of my post and chose to go for the bits that you cared about arguing.

Tizz So my view on the totalfreedom.me domain is that it's something I plan to keep and maintain for as long as I can afford to keep things running, even if we killed all the game servers, I'd very much like to keep whatever forums and other online resources we have still accessible for many years to come, given how many older members of the community would know that domain, I'd be very unlikely to consider giving it away to anyone as I value the longer term historic value and archiving of TF above saving the £10 a year it'd save me.

DragonSlayer2189 The executive roles were generally re-scoped because we don't have many other active game-modes, and the existing executive roles were ultimately written and designed around the Freedom game-mode. Some of these roles in the future may move to be cross-network, some will naturally remain specific to the game-mode to which they are assigned, but right now as per this thread the executives were changed to reporting into Steven and by extension are currently scoped to the Freedom Game-mode.

The main reason for this is that a lot of the comments around executives were that they didn't understand their scope or didn't think X, Y or Z were the right things for the network, this way (Unless otherwise tasked) executives report to Steven and he makes the final call on who is appointed / removed going forward.

I'm hoping to get some feedback from current members of the community, I suspect this thread will cause drama and likely the return of folks that have been inactive, and while I value your views, my interest is in what the current active TF community feel on this matter.

As part of the recent change in the Freedom Game-Mode's ownership, I wanted to start to tweak policies so they made sense in the new context, a lot of our policies have always been written with the assumption that we are and will never be more than just a Freedom server, and over the last year that has changed, and will continue to change as we launch the plots game-mode and launch other game-modes into the future.

The ownership policy as a policy continues to be a tricky one, because in it's current format, it's no longer enforceable and arguably not really going to achieve what it was originally intended to do, when Mark was custodian of the domain it gave the policy some teeth and was seen as the generally accepted way we would future-proof TF's existence as a community, with that no longer being the case I want to re-visit with the community the scope of the policy and where we go from here.

My original plan had been to re-work the ownership policy to apply only to the Freedom Game-mode, which Steven now owns, that felt in keeping with the spirit of the original policy, and still gives the community some power over the big decision of who owns their server, it did however end up removing nearly everything that made the ownership policy useful, and felt like it would just water it down to the point of being pointless.

It also meant there are issues that would remain unresolved, especially if I were to go inactive / anything like that, but equally now there is nobody external owning the domain name, I couldn't think of a good way to address it, this is the first time since Mark handed over to Windows that the owner of the server has also owned the domain and had actual full control over things.

Under Seth's ownership I was very vocal about the fact that the ownership policy was the only thing that actually gave him legitimacy as the owner of the server, and I don't think that's changed today, but the fact of the matter remains that the policy is no longer enforceable / able to be invoked without me agreeing due to the domain ownership, and as such it in it's format today, is totally pointless.

I guess my question is what are peoples thoughts, do you care about having an ownership policy, if so what are your thoughts on how to make it useful and meaningful?

I've split this out into a new thread because it's de-railing the other one.

I'd also ask that if you want to have a conversation about the EsoTalk software, to do so without getting into specifics of certain users / communities running said software, because that's also nothing to do with this thread, and frankly not something that we need to get into / start a fight over on here.

I've made a few changes, so for transparency they are as follows

    • Re-named the thread to more accurately describe the scope of the policy.
    • Formatting changes to add headers and bold so the policy is actually practical to read.

Some further changes will need to be made as the policy no longer functions as it was originally intended, but that needs further thought and attention.

Further to the previous threads on the plots server, I wanted to give a bit of a status update.

We're currently working towards the plan as discussed in this thread - https://forum.totalfreedom.me/…world-your-input-required

Right now the work is happening to get the development server (dev-plots-01, so nothing to do with the Freedom dev server) into a state where we're happy with it and that the plugins all play nice and config is as it should be, then we can start getting the live server up and running.

Right now this is the state of things:

    Plugins:

    • Essentials
    • Essentials Spawn
    • Essentials Discord
    • FastAsyncWorldEdit
    • PlotSquared

We will need to add NetworkManager, Plan, CoreProtect (Or alternative) and providing FAWE plays nice with CoreProtect or whatever we do end up using in it's place, we'll then add goBrush & goPaint. I haven't yet had a chance to look at VoxelSniper so not 100% sure if that'll end up making the cut or not but I'm hoping it'll play nice with the other plugins and perms.

    Spec / Other Details

    • Initial plan will be to have a large 3 x 3 set of plots serving as the spawn (Merged) where folks will load into. This will be in the 0,0 plot (Well, effectively).
    • The next 2 "Rings" around it will be made up of MB Builds. Both these builds and the spawn have been formally tasked on the ECD to coordinate and get back to me on.
    • The plots will be 25 x 25, this seemed to work as a reasonably size, and means merging plots shouldn't end up with too dramatic a figure.
    • I'm currently working on the world border, it looks like it might not be perfect due to the "Dynamic" way that PlotSquared offers is absolutely naff, but we're looking at initially offering an 18 x 18 grid of Plots, with 49 of those being used for spawn and MB Showcasing. The remaining 275 plots I expect to be enough for the initial go-live, we will be able to increase the world-border as appropriate if we start to run low on plots.

For an idea on the layout I was talking about with the "Rings" of MB Builds, see this diagram (Doesn't show the full 18 x 18 grid, just the centre out for a bit)

There is still quite a lot of detail to work out, if you have general feedback for the plots server I'd ask you to post it here: https://forum.totalfreedom.me/…world-your-input-required

And there are two specific threads that I would appreciate the communities input on:
