As many will be aware, we recently approved a change to one of the longest standing systems on TF which was to move away from indefinite / permanent bans, and instead set a longer term ban duration. Given the history around this it's been slightly more complicated than some of our usual changes to actually make, and for the time being there's a lot of manual steps involved, and some details we need to work through. I'm going to try to cover off everything that is changing with the indef ban process through this thread.

Bans that have been issued with a "Minimum Appeal Duration"

In all cases where a ban was issued with a minimum time until the player could appeal, that duration will now be treated as the ban duration itself. The user will be un-banned once that minimum duration has expired.

Existing Indef Bans that had no minimum duration

In all of these cases (Unless covered under a different category on this thread) the ban duration will be set at 6 months from Today. While this isn't perfect, it seems like a reasonably fair way to handle it. Likewise these bans (Again unless also covered under a different heading on the thread) will still be able to appeal their bans prior to the expiry date.

    Appeals

Appealing where the individual banned believes the ban was not justified, the player was innocent or evidence presented was mis-represented or forged

As per our existing process, we will always be happy to hear appeals where an individual has solid reason to believe the ban or other sanction they have been issued was inappropriate. If you genuinely believe the ban was made in error, bad faith or that you genuinely should not be banned then please proceed to make an appeal as you normally would.

I did the thing you accused me of but I don't think I should be banned as long as I have been.

For the most part the ban duration is set in stone, if you don't like the duration then for the most part, don't get banned...

The duration of the ban will be discussed by admins going forward as part of the ban request process, and it is expected that any justifications for a shorter / longer ban will be discussed and subject to a rigorous discussion by the staff team there. If an admin believes that the ban duration is inappropriate and doesn't align with existing precedence set they should raise this with the Executive Ban Manager and escalate as appropriate.

If the player genuinely believes their ban duration is not fair or justified, they should seek the support of a member of the server staff who can follow the above process to escalate and where appropriate revise the ban duration.

    Unappealable Bans

These bans will now transform into genuine "Permanent" bans and will be subject to the same rules here where there are no appeals granted. Ultimately nothing changes in this case.

    IP Only Bans

We have a number of IP Addresses that have been banned due to being associated with botnets / spambots. These will also remain permanently banned and are not time limited. Players that are affected by these bans will be asked to raise an appeal on the forums where we can review and wherever possible remove the IP Ban.

    Self Requests

Self requested bans will continue to operate how they always have for the time being where there is no minimum duration and the player can be released on request.

    Mandated Holidays / Forced Absence

In some cases we have had to remove individuals from the community for their own mental health. In these cases the ban manager will set a minimum duration after which they will review the ban and either release the ban or extend it for a future review. There is no guaranteed removals from a mandated holiday unless the ban manager / owner feels it is in the community and players best interest to return at that time.

I'm sure I'll have missed things on this list, if so please let me know and I'll edit this thread accordingly.

Yeah Proboards didn't really support any sort of remotely dynamic avatars and it was confusing and irritating as I recall back then when you had most the forum on the same default picture.

I see no reason not to remove the requirement and turn it into a "You probably should do this" sort of route like others have said, WoltLab's default avatar behaviour is considerably less crappy so makes this less painful.

Vouch just remove the IPs from them

As I've said before, ips won't be removed from the ibr process. It's a core part do the process and serves as a much longer term record beyond that of the indef ban file.

If the board is made public again it will be made public with ips. I'm not going to additional trouble to hide them and certainly don't see it as a valuable use of time to edit historical ones which we would need to do.

My main concern with this is that it may actually negatively influence votes. The fact its isolated from the public's eye makes it significantly more difficult for someone to influence people's votes through pressure politics.

I will not vote on this, as I would like to know what other Seniors and even Executives think first.

Back then, before Ryan Wild was owner, when an executive position became vacant, admins can apply to be nominated for that position. There would be a poll that allows you to vote which nomiee should receive the position in question. However, the thing is: this poll was public, everyone can see and vote on it. Meaning, this whole "pressure politics" is not new to TotalFreedom.

More accurately, the polls and self nomination was only a thing during Seths ownership.

If you take such great offence to this, suggest reversing it on this forum and the Proboards one, because last time it was suggested to be hidden like this, there was fairly strong community support.

No, this is false. The community wanted IPs and other personal information to be hidden from IBRs, not the IBR itself to be hidden. You just made the IBRs itself admin only as an easy way out because you're not willing to have two versions of the same IBR, one for the public and one for only admins to see.

Also, I have already made a suggestion to make IBRs public again, that doesn't involve making two copies of an IBR since you don't like that.

Which would require going through historically and purging IP's from old threads, in this case including Proboards, which would mean those records would be permanently lost. The forums act as a copy of the historic indef bans and is a useful resource if we ever need to re-ban someone.

No, I'm going to decide when it's better to cut my losses and align a legacy forum I had nothing to do with from an administration perspective with the current production version when people threaten, harass and attempt to commit illegal activities that target the server or it's community.

The forum is in the process of being re structured and those boards are two that I plan to fold into other boards. There will continue to be some form of non private support but not structured the way it currently is.

The main reason I haven't prioritised this to date is because the goal has been to split the plot world out into a new server. I just haven't gotten around to finishing it. Once the network goes to 1.18 I plan to re start that effort.

    In the interests of transparency.

I've had no choice but to hide the indef ban requests board and it's sub-boards from the Proboards forums. This is due to continued attacks and threats of illegal activities targeting this server from individuals that have taken issue with the fact they got caught breaking the rules historically, and their IP At the time is included in such a request.

To remind folks, IP's aren't able to be used to personally identify anyone on their own, nor can it be used in conjunction with your MC Username or UUID to personally identify you, so there shouldn't be an issue with this, but again certain people would rather break the law than actually contact me or my company to request the data be redacted.

The individuals in question are also hereby Indefinitely banned under the Category 0 offences, and their bans will be unappealable. A separate thread will follow in the appropriate boards.

This is the only time I will be making such a chance to the proboards forums, if a pattern starts to form where we need to hide more boards, I will simply take the entire site offline for anyone that isn't Finest, Steven and myself and that will be that. The entire forum is intended as a read-only archive from when it was closed down and moved here, it's a deep shame and somewhat troubling to me that we've been forced to take such action to protect the community and it's members.

As an early advisory, I am planning to drop 1.17.x support from the network on the 21st October 2022.

This is to enable the game-modes to start updating to 1.18.x and to not end up with compatibility issues when servers restart / go offline.

The Hub server will be the first to actually update to 1.18 which will happen in the days / weeks after 1.17.x support has been withdrawn from the network. My expectation is Skyblock and Freedom will update as appropriate after.

A further announcement will be made when we have decided to drop the 1.19 support from the network.

    Which will simply never happen.

Can you at least consider a temporary true-anarchy SMP for at least 14 days or so? Doesn't have to be Bungee'd or connected to Atlas Media/TotalFreedom in any way.

No. Read my previous posts because I've already explained that the community guidelines are non-negotiable.

The reason why Ryan Wild won't impliment an anarchy server is because he fears that it would ruin the reputation of his company and TotalFreedom. Trying to suggest an alternative that where either doesn't happen.

Again, please read my previous posts on this thread because that is not a true or accurate statement.

Then report it... I can't be here to police 24/7 and things will get missed. The fact the rules are expected to be followed is the point I've made, and isn't something I'll budge on. You've made this argument before, and yet failed to make any actual effort (That I've seen) to report such content that violates the community guidelines.

And this is where the suggestion has and always does fall apart.

We don't launch a game-mode on the network that doesn't conform to the community guidelines, "No Rules" will simply not fly.

I mentioned this above, but there are a few reasons why a server with no rules shouldn't be a problem with TotalFreedom/Atlas:

    • The server could be disconnected from the Bungee network and work just as well.
    • Anarchy means the responsibility for any bad behavior as a result of "no rules" doesn't fall on TF/Atlas.
    • TF is, and always has been associated with some extremely toxic behavior anyway, but often, TF staff are responsible. In Anarchy, this behavior is more expected and doesn't really "damage" the reputation of the server itself.

And none of it makes any differences. The reality is the rest of the servers on the network will be judged by the actions in that server, and from my own moral and ethical view, I wouldn't want people spouting some of the shit I suspect would be spouted.

Anything with TF's branding is required (And it's non negotiable) to follow the community guidelines. They're fairly loose as it is and for a game-mode like anarchy not a lot would necessarily need to apply, but some rules would apply either way.

I'm not willing to run servers under the TF or any other branding that would have no rules and no accountability of the players.

but set up so that users are free to play on the server without rules

And this is where the suggestion has and always does fall apart.
