I'm creating a couple of threads to start a conversation around the block list for our WorldEdit and ASyncWorldEdit. With various changes we've made to the server over the last few years, now feels as good of a time as any to do a bit of a community review of what's blocked and what's not blocked, and if we need to edit the list.

I'd like to see a strong argument either to un-block, re-block, or keep as-is and some strong justification if we want to make changes to the list. Likewise if there's a suggestion to make a change, please have a healthy discussion to help thrash out if it should be changed or not.

The following items are not currently blocked, but are commented out in the configuration file. What I'd like is the community to have a sensible discussion on if these items should remain un-blocked (And if so I'll remove them fully from the config) or if there is any good reason to re-block them.

Just to update, it looks like the latency issues are still really bad, as a result I'm not going to bother trying to fire up the Freedom server for the time being. I was hoping by now the worst of it would have been resolved but it seems to be even worse than last night and considerably less stable from the services I've got in Hetzner trying to talk out to any other part of the internet. I'll keep you all posted on progress.

Should be resolved, your post was still made during the maintenance window

Yes I forgot to update the thread here but yes it was during the maintenance window, it was more to be clear that there were still issues and the server was intentionality down and not something we had really planned.

    Hi Folks,

Just for transparency, we've ran into a string of issues tonight that while looked related, turn out to be totally separate.

The first issue that was noticed and caused disruption was earlier this evening where players were getting kicked due to no login servers being available. This was the result of me applying some OS Patches to the Bungee when I was bringing a new server online. The patches included Java updates and for some reason they interfered with the certificate authority trust anchors and the bungee could no longer establish secure connections externally, as a result it failed to connect to Mojang's servers and players couldn't join. This issue was resolved Friday 28th October 2022 22:22:40.

The second and currently ongoing issue is the result of Hetzner, the company Steven purchased the physical server that runs Freedom-01, performing maintenance to their backbone infrastructure which we were not made aware of. For those curious this is the maintenance - https://status.hetzner.com/inc…8e-48f3-b611-9031024a9c86

This has caused significant increases in latency between our network proxy (bungee) and the Freedom server, resulting in the network believing the Freedom server is offline due to it's lack of ping response, this also started to cause players to get significantly higher pings as I suspect traffic was getting re-routed elsewhere.

We can't do a lot other than wait for the maintenance to be complete before restoring the server, apologies for what has been a bit of a mess.

I'm working through the backlog of plugins to review and add to the Freedom server, but so far am struggling to see how it will actually work in practice.

What I'm trying to figure out is if I need to define all vehicles through the config (Hence rendering the flexibility of the plugin slim to none) or if you can define vehicles in game.

If anyone has some expertise in this plugin and can give me a bit of a crash course that would be greatly appreciated.

It's worth noting that in any case, we will need to be performing a wipe of the server worlds as part of the next version upgrade we do to the underlying server. Our world sizes have nearly doubled in size over the last 6 months, this combined with the substantial world-gen changes means the 1.18 or 1.19 upgrade is going to be the ideal time to do this wipe

Does this include plotworld by chance?

Yes, it includes everything and anything on Freedom-01.

ryan why is it so bad that the server world size grows?

Because we're going to run out of space to store them, when that happens we suffer catastrophic data loss and people get very upset.

EDIT: To also clarify, we're using around 70% of the physical servers storage, and if we transform the worlds to 1.18 / 1.19, the world sizes are expected to increase in size as part of the upgrade, on average by 50%... Which means we'd need to buy a substantially bigger server.

So there's been a number of threads (I can go find them if people really care) but there has yet to be actual consensus on what people want... Could I suggest folks give some serious thoughts as to if this is something they really want and would actually play for more than a day or two?

We're currently looking at the upgrade path for the Freedom-01 server, and at the moment there's a very viable option for us to skip straight past 1.18 and support 1.19 natively on Freedom-01.

1.18 will involve a fair bit more effort to get supported than 1.19 as we currently see things, so from a technical perspective 1.19 is the preference.

I will stress, we have no date currently in mind for any upgrades, and once we've decided on how we're performing the upgrades and when, we'll make sure everyone here gets a few weeks of warning. We might potentially run two servers in parallel for a while to allow people to save and download content from the current worlds while the new server is also online so as to minimise the overall disruption to you all.

I've added a poll, votes would be appreciated.

EDIT: For those that want some data to help make their decision, this is the current count of attempted connections to the network in 2022 for 1.17, 1.18 and 1.19 versions of MC.

I do agree that the punishments should be up to the administrators, but challenging your own ban =/= deciding your punishment. If someone believes that they have been banned for too long, then they should be able to and the community shall decide if that's the case.

As per the original post, if the ban was incorrectly issued then the player can 100% appeal it. What they can't do is say "I think that's too long you're being mean."

Alco is just another human being like you, me, and everyone here. No-one has the time to go through the, thousands upon thousands of bans from 2010 to now.

Nor are they expected to... Please re read the original post because I've at no point suggested this is required.

Also, why is this a matter of guilty until proven innocent, and not the other way around?

Again not sure where you're getting this from? The decision making on if to approve / reject a ban request doesn't change.

Picture the scene: an administrator with a grudge against a particular operator maliciously abuses their power to unfairly ban said operator on multiple occasions when no one is around. When asked by other administrators about why a particular operator was banned, they make up a story about something like threatening to DDoS the server and fabricate evidence to convince his fellow staff members. When the operator attempts to appeal said bans, naturally the admin will comment on the appeal by providing the fake story and evidence. Not knowing the reality of the situation, the community sides with the admin and their fake story because they trust the admin's word more than the operator's. Despite the operator's pleas, the appeal is denied as a result.

The previous ban appeal system had a variety of different use cases, but arguably the most important one it had is how it held staff members accountable. Instead of adjusting the old system to work with temporary bans, we have taken a leap backwards when it comes to operators' rights by stripping away an operator's ability to defend themselves and making it much harder for operators to hold staff members accountable for their actions.

Again you need to re read the original post because none of this is true. In this case the op can appeal the ban (even if it's only part of the ban) on the grounds they had their ibr approved and they did nothing wrong. What they can't do is say "Yeah I did all that but you should change the ban duration because I feel like it"

Uhhh, this seems like a major step backwards...

Players never had a say how long they were banned before. Why should someone who has broken the rules decide their own punishment?

    Can this be done publicly?

That's down to the Ban Manager but I'd suggest it should form part of the admin discussion on the ban request itself.

EDIT: in the event the challenge is made public it's worth noting due to the current way bans are managed the individual banned as well as any non staff members won't have their views considered.

Agreeing with videogamesmash here. The revoking of players' ability to challenge the length of the ban is so against the name of the server.

First, as I've said above players never have decided their own punishments. The admin team have. Secondly the name of this server has nothing to do with its policies and it's a totally bullshit argument.

Not to be rude to any future, current, or past staff members, but I doubt that any of them are actually that proactive to check and call out every single ban duration. This is why players shall retain the ability to challenge their ban duration because, once again, there isn't going to be someone checking everyone's bans

Yet we do... That's the entire role of the ban manager. If you don't want to get banned don't break the rules.
