[POLL] The matter of NSFW content

  • How should NSFW content be handled on the server? 34

    1. It should be allowed if it's not being publicly spread, not being intentionally shown to minors, and not near the current spawnpoint (20) 59%
    2. It should be allowed but heavily restricted in what can be depicted by a number of factors (explain in a reply) (3) 9%
    3. It should be removed if found, but the person who created it should not be sanctioned for it (1) 3%
    4. It should be removed and the person who created it should be sanctioned (9) 26%
    5. Other (explain in a reply) (1) 3%

NSFW content (such as builds, pixel art, or map art) has become a controversial topic as of recently and people have been complaining about its inconsistent moderation. To hopefully correct this, I've decided to make a poll and help come to a consensus for how this content should be moderated.

When voting in this poll, keep this in mind:

    1. This server's demographic mainly consists of people under the age of 18 and exposing them to such content could have major consequences
    2. We recently had to crack down on NSFW discussions on the Discord server significantly due to a combination of factors that all came together at once due to leniency (see the #LetsCureCancerAgain movement)
    3. When you click on the "Multiplayer" option in the Main Menu for the first time, you will get a warning that experiences online are not rated. This means we should not be expected to be family-friendly
    4. Some believe we should not babysit our community because then it could snowball into other restrictions

It's in your best interest to explain your vote as well. Make your choice.

  • Who is at fault? 24

    1. The person who was near the build (1) 4%
    2. The person teleported to the player who was near the build (4) 17%
    3. Both (2) 8%
    4. Neither (17) 71%

Here's a second poll, if someone randomly teleports to a player who happened to be near NSFW content of some kind but said nothing about their location and where they are at, who should be at fault?

  • i mean if we sanction people for ERP 'n shit i believe in the interest of consistency this sort of stuff should also be prohibited...

It is also important to consider that this is a server of which children play. Those who make the argument that this server isn't "designed" for kids should still acknowledge that they are active participants in the community. I view it a moral responsibility that we protect them.

this. and i'm disappointed that this had to be a poll because it is common sense to not allow nsfw content on a minecraft server, let alone one thats supposed to attract people not turn them on

  • Contrary to most above opinions, I take the first option: "It should be allowed if it's not being publicly spread, not being intentionally shown to minors, and not near the current spawnpoint".

This is a freedom server, so while no we should not let NSFW run rampant nor make it common, I see nothing wrong with it quietly existing out of sight.

i mean if we sanction people for ERP 'n shit i believe in the interest of consistency this sort of stuff should also be prohibited...

This is a good point, but when is this server consistent? Also, I (perhaps mistakenly) believed sanctions for that were less to do with the NSFW itself and more the public nature of it.

It is also important to consider that this is a server of which children play... ...I view it a moral responsibility that we protect them.

Likely not the best way to put my response, but still: This is similar thinking to the bullshit that resulted in things like COPPA and Minecraft's Chat Reporting system. "Little Timmy might be accidentally exposed to something, so we must remove all of it from everywhere!".

Yes minors play here. No they should not be intentionally exposed to NSFW. That does not mean there is a need to ban every bit of it from the server entirely, at least not in the name of their protection.

Also fairly good points, but still debatable.

  • I can't really tell if this post is directed towards the Minecraft server or the Discord server, because one is way worse than the other in terms of NSFW content.

I feel like we need to do a better job about chat monitoring when it comes to NSFW, because at some point in time it's going to go way too far to the point of no return and we can't let it get to there.

In terms of builds, as long as no one can find it, I think it should be okay. I can't stress the "as long as no one can find it" enough.

I feel like some of us overreact when we see anything NSFW related. Not saying it's a bad thing cause of the whole "minors on the server" situation, but we don't need to react that much.

i do not and will not allow anything nsfw in terms of but not limited to pornography, talks about personal sex experiences, anything too deep in regards to gore and such. we’ve had to crack down on sexual talk recently and i don’t plan on easing that back up

i personally allow discussion of adult topics. as in their existence. sex is a thing adults do. murder is a thing that happens. yes, there are minors on the server but the youngest allowed on discord is 13 and i’d invite you to find a 13 year old that doesn’t know of these concepts. beyond that see above

anyhow and i mean this genuinely and not in a bad way - if theres any issues that i or my team have overlooked would you mind shooting me a DM so we can take further steps? even if it happened a while ago we can still work on this further

I was just saying in general it could go too far. I haven't found anyone trying to get around the extreme NSFW chit-chat.

I thought that was more of an ERP issue and not just a general NSFW thing? I could be wrong.

I do think that the MC chat needs some sort of filter because again, kids are everywhere foaming at the mouth when they see "Free OP" on TopG or whatever, and I personally don't want them seeing something foolish going on between a group of people and that same group brushing it off like it's nothing important. Sure, we hardly know people's ages when they join, so that's why I think a filter should be there just to be on the safer side and not the sorry side.

If we are speaking in terms of pure policy and consistency with the fundamental concept of freedom then sure I don't care. However, myself and others are speaking in terms of our own morality. I find it reprehensible and frankly disgusting how sexually driven our culture is today. This is especially applicable when speaking of a video game in which children play. I have a distinct boundary with regards to NSFW content and that line is crossed when you involve children. End of discussion for me.

  • I personally align with Luke's position regarding discussion of adult-themed topics. As both the forum and the Minecraft servers are places with no age check, when I'm with players I don't know, my golden rule is, would I show or say it out loud in a playground?

I think that adult stuff should be removed if it emerges and sanctions should be considered if there was gross negligence or a clear intent to share it.

Now, for the legal headache (mind you, I'm not a lawyer and walls of text are tiring to read for me, you should feel free to correct me). It looks like that producing and sharing adult content violates both Mojang's and Microsoft's terms of service:

    CONTENT

    [...]

If you are going to make something available on or through our Game, it must not be offensive to people or illegal, it must be honest, and it must be your own creation. Some examples of the types of things you must not make available using our Game include: posts that include racist or homophobic language; posts that are bullying or trolling; posts that are offensive or that damage our or another person's reputation; posts that include porn or someone else's creation or image; or posts that impersonate a moderator or try to trick or exploit people

    3. Code of Conduct

    [...]

3.a.iv. Don’t publicly display or use the Services to share inappropriate content or material (involving, for example, nudity, bestiality, pornography, offensive language, graphic violence, or criminal activity).

This isn't taking any local law in consideration, and we know there's been being a crackdown on adult content in many places.

My conclusion is that allowing NSFW content to be freely hosted and shared is a legal liability that Atlas, its owner (Ryan) and his assistants (executives etc.) will likely consider too risky.

  • This is a good point, but when is this server consistent?

even if the server isn't the most consistent when it comes to other stuff i still believe it's a good idea to be consistent with this sort of stuff considering the importance of having defined guidelines against this sort of stuff

Likely not the best way to put my response, but still: This is similar thinking to the bullshit that resulted in things like COPPA and Minecraft's Chat Reporting system. "Little Timmy might be accidentally exposed to something, so we must remove all of it from everywhere!".

don't have a law degree or anything of the similar but i'm pretty sure COPPA was intended to protect children's privacy and not just "ban all 13+ content from the internet".

the chat system doesn't actively filter out chat messages; that's a separate feature entirely and is only something enabled by default in Realms.

fyi the text filtering config is something completely unrelated to 1.19 (although it seems to have been enabled by default in realms around the same time as 1.19 was released) - it was implemented around 1.16.4 pre release 1, see here for more information (slightly outdated but it still has useful information).

i've flown in random directions on the server and encountered NSFW map art among other things, what's to stop Little Timmy from discovering something like that on his own? i don't think Timmy should be exposed to NSFW on a game with a playerbase of mainly minors, even "unintentionally"...

  • i'm pretty sure COPPA was intended to protect children's privacy and not just "ban all 13+ content from the internet".

I did forget about that, but in many cases the result has been less about privacy. I used COPPA/MC Reporting as general examples.

    Fair enough.

  • Oh. So we're finally ready to have THIS discussion...If only someone had brought this up years ago so we could fix the inconsistency...oh, wait a second! https://totalfreedom.boards.net/thread/64640/images

My opinion on this can be summarized by my words from 2019, which still hold true today:

Honestly at this point if the staff here are going to keep up this behavior I'd recommend making this an 18+ community. I don't have much more to say than the fact that it's kinda sad to see this community repeatedly break their own rules.

Some words from Polaris Seltzeris are also worth reading:

The conduct policy should be followed consistently. I think it's unacceptable that admins can get away with literal violations of the rules, where if a regular member does it they could be reprimanded accordingly regardless of how 'rare' it is.

Today it's a bit murkier than just admins and ops like it used to be, but the rules surrounding NSFW are still being enforced with incredible inconsistency. It's time to lay down a consistent for this type of thing to avoid future conflicts. I don't care if that policy is to allow it all or to forbid it everywhere, it just needs to be defined AND enforced in a clear way so people don't get sanctioned for what would be considered an innocent joke from someone else.

  • It's a fucking minecraft server. A joke penis build in its own area is grand.

    A sex joke is fine.

The problem was we had minors specifically being sexually explicit with eachother.

Which I don't think is a problem anymore since it was addressed. Also the #LCCA helped with that.

  • i mean if we sanction people for ERP 'n shit i believe in the interest of consistency this sort of stuff should also be prohibited...

Difference between builds and ERP is it's public in chat for all to see. A build can be isolated to the world boarder and never be found. Regardless though if it is found then removing it should be allowed, like if you found graffiti of a penis, you'd remove it (in an ideal world). Punishment shouldn't be issued unless the build was obviously placed where many eyes would see since it would more than likely have been done as a throwaway gag by a few friends (who doesn't love building a cock spewing semen on their AFK buddy?).

With this all being said if you make The Leaning Tower of Penis you better save it as a schematic or download the world otherwise that thing's getting a different kind of tower's experience.

According to quantum mechanics, unless something is observed, there is an equal chance of it both being and not being there. Hence it is said to be in superposition, until observed. However we are somehow fully certain, despite never having directly observed, that you indeed have no bitches. Your bitchlessness has broken the rules quantum mechanics had established. Indeed an impressive feat.
