Ban advertising (your mc server) on discord/in-game

  • Uhh yeah. All people do is "Join (insert crappy mc server) !!"

This is spam, even if you do not actually spam. Its an unsolicited advertisement that is not actually a decently advertising your server. Its really annoying and serves no purpose besides trying to leech off players

I believe the current rule is like you can advertise once within the hour? Why is this? Why not just allow it all if you are going to allow it once.

Note, this does not prohibit advertisements such as these https://forum.totalfreedom.me/t/associated-communities
this is targeted at the spam messages in-game and on the discord

  • Object.

Limiting ads should fall under the judgement of the moderator, which is why I also object to the idea of a "10 min interval" for ads. Otherwise you might as well just make an auto-ban for listing the same ip within a 10-min time-span, instead of having a human involved.
As long as its not being a nuisance/cluttering the chat, then I don't see why players shouldn't have the freedom to do so.

  • Maybe a channel on the Discord should be created for players to advertise in. Have slow mode enabled so people can’t just spam advertisements. It’d also be a good idea to require them to have a some sort of role that is earned after a certain amount of time in order to chat in the channel.

As for the server, I personally don’t see an issue with them advertising. As long as they are following the once per hour rule, then I have no issue.

  • @StevenNL2000#4563 I understand the freedom portion (hence why I'm not against abolishing it completely) but I feel people are only taking advantage of it to only come on and advertise and not do anything else on the server. For example, there's a big difference in someone saying "while I'm here, check out my server!" verses "lets use TotalFreedom to advertise!"

  • @Madea#4566 Actually, coming online only to advertise also used to be explicitly mentioned in the conduct policy as something that is not allowed. This allowed admins to both punish players that were spam advertising and ones that were not spamming, but also not really playing.

  • @Madea#4571 You can't derive from the current conduct policy that a player is breaking any rules if they only join the server to advertise exactly once per hour. With that extra rule in place, you might be able to decrease the delay between advertisements.

  • @Noah#4690 Yeah im not sure, from the replies many people seem to think advertising should be allowed MORE. all im really asking for is consistency considering advertising isnt allowed at all on the discord,

  • As Steven said, we want to strike a balance between people joining just to advertise and having some freedom. With that in mind, I'm going to modify and clarify the rules surrounding this.

Starting now, players may advertise other servers once an hour, in-game, and in the server chat channels on the discord only. This limit is cross-platform, for example, if you advertise a server in-game, you may not do it again within one hour even if it is on a different server or in a discord server chat channel.

No advertisement of any kind (server links, Minecraft IPs, etc) is allowed outside of those channels on Discord. I expect the Discord mods to use their discretion and treat everything on a case-by-case basis.
