Debunking Misinformation & Hysteria Surrounding the 1.19.1 Chat Reporting Update

  • Context forgery no longer works (e.x. nodusclient/gaslight, video here); as the signature you send chat messages with is now based on the previous chat message. As such, if the real chat message signature is not based on the previous reported chat message (which in context forgery attacks would be malicious), your report will be thrown out and deemed as false. Here's a nice video with a visual explanation explaining why context forgery doesn't work anymore.

The video debunking it (which I linked) had been removed as the debunker thought he was being too rude. Sorry about this and I unfortunately don't have any backups of this video. I'll change the link if it gets reuploaded.

  • this is going to sound really bad out of context but if im on a private server with only people i know and no children i should be able to say whatever i want.

if im gonna spam the n word (which i wouldnt do but if i did) and everyone else on the server is fine with it, its dumb for some universal moderator to come in and say “you cant say that,” thats the job of the server mods, not mojang

i didnt pay $30 to have minecraft tell me what i can and cant say on a private server. the language used on a server is specific to the culture behind a server and a mojang moderation team will never understand the context behind a reported message

If everyone on your private server is fine with it, and they don't report you for it, then nothing will happen, as chat is only sent to mojang when a player files a report.

  • I think it's quite ironic that people complain about Mojang adding chat reporting even though it's existed on almost every platform that allows chatting since their creation, and no one seems to complain about it. Steam, a platform that lots of people spend hundreds of dollars on, even bans people for harassment, yet no one is going "#savesteam". How come?

You can turn off chat signatures (which are required for reporting to work) using mods

if it’s private with people you know who are comfortable who exactly will report this action

  • And I don't think I'll be able to convince you that Mojang/Microsoft haven't literally turned Minecraft into an Orwellian Nightmare.

"Ignorance is Strength" - George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four

I don't really care about the report system, I just wish Mojang did a better job at communicating with the player base. I'm sure a lot of hate came from the fact that they kind of dropped that in a snapshot, with only like one line talking about it and no prior warnings

The reason for the lack of communication is to make it easier for Microsoft/Mojang to lie about the chat reporting system. The less things you say, the easier it is to lie, as there is less things you have to lie about.

They claim they're doing this to "Protect Users", but that's just doublespeak, the true reason why they added this system is because they want to maximize control over their game.

Just think about it, if the reason actually was about protecting users, then wouldn't they made it an option for servers to opt-out from the system? The fact they didn't provide an option for opting-out makes it clear that they want control.

The takeaway here is that Mojang made all of these promises to freedom, and they delivered. However, with the addition of the chat reporting system, the are effectively removing freedom from their game, a promise which is now broken.

The game is no longer about you, it's about them.

Steam never made promises to freedom, so therefore nobody cares about Steam banning people.

  • im talking ouot of my own and not anything on this post

mojang has shown that they arent going to communicate with the community and we are so close to being able to find out who worked on this system the only thing that has to happen is that doc releases the information

also i dont think this is mojangs fault microsoft is forcing this

  • it's as easy as simply not being an idiot

    1) u dont have to worry abt being banned if ur with people who u trust

    2) u dont have to worry if ur not a dumbass and say stupid discriminatory or nsfw type shit

    3) just disable it lol

paper developers have literally stated that reporting has been a thing for a long time and only has just been added in game

    stop whining

Oh yes, because companies HAVE to follow something that the creator said 11 years ago. Besides, it could be argued that the EULA was breaking this promise due to creating rules on minecraft servers, but no one really said that. How come?

The whole reason Minecraft is in Microsoft's hands is because the community lost their shit over the EULA that inhibited selling game mechanics or items for irl money, so you're wrong about this. People DID say a lot, and it was enough to make Notch go "yeah, fuck this".

Minecraft's community has had a history of going ape-shit at the smallest sign of Mojang trying to screw them over, or just going Thanos end-credits scene style and doing it themselves when they don't add features they wanna see.

According to quantum mechanics, unless something is observed, there is an equal chance of it both being and not being there. Hence it is said to be in superposition, until observed. However we are somehow fully certain, despite never having directly observed, that you indeed have no bitches. Your bitchlessness has broken the rules quantum mechanics had established. Indeed an impressive feat.

Or, gee, maybe they don't communicate much because their features are subject to change and as such any statements they make may become invalid... Not entirely sure why a multibillion dollar company would lie about their own product.

They claim they're doing this to "Protect Users", but that's just doublespeak, the true reason why they added this system is because they want to maximize control over their game.

Because abusive servers could just opt-out? Invalidating the purpose of the system in the first place?

Adding onto test 's response, this trailer isn't even made by Mojang. It's made by Vareide (video here). It can be surmised these are not promises made by Mojang.
