Today April 25th, also known as Liberation Day, is a national holiday in Italy that commemorates the victory of the Italian resistance movement against Nazi Germany and the Italian Social Republic, puppet state of the Nazis and rump state of the fascists, during World War II.
While this date marks the start of a general insurrection in the territories still occupied by the nazi-fascist forces, May 3rd is the day of the end of the war on Italian land and more than 20 years of fascist regime.
