Reform Indefinite Ban Requests

  • IP addresses have been a large part of Indefinite Ban Requests for as long as they have been around circa 2012/2013. In 2019 a suggestion was proposed and approved to make indefinite ban requests public in the interest of transparency. However, this has brought along a whole new set of problems - we have received multiple complaints from multiple users about how their IP addresses have been publicized, and personally I agree with them. I have seen what people can do with just IP addresses (in fact, I ended up getting suspended and indefinitely banned for it once under Seth's reign), and it actually terrifies me if you play your cards right on the telephone.

We have heard the many calls to reform how Indefinite Ban Requests are handled, and we're going to listen. This suggestion calls for a reform of the Indefinite Ban Request system to remove IP addresses entirely from public requests. While IP addresses would still be indefinitely banned, the IP itself would not be included in the public request. This implementation protects the privacy of the individual who done fucked up, while still retaining the transparency that comes from an indefinite ban request.

  • Vouch.

Here's a situation which sums up my viewpoint.

If Player001 logs onto the server, sends a grabify link to Gamer001 to get his IP address and then posts that IP address into the server chat, he will be promptly banned by Staff001 and the chat will be cleared.

If Gamer001 then goes and crashes the server using an assortment of minecarts, Staff001 puts that same IP up on the forums for all to see.

In both of these situations, Staff001 is doing their job correctly and by the book. Yet these two situations have varying levels of respect to the privacy of the IP address.

Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.

  • I have with immediate effect reverted the previously approved suggestion where indef ban requests would be public. They are now restricted to Freedom game-mode admins only.

Further reform may be an option, but right now the same people who have access to look IP's in the game-mode are the only ones now that can see threads.

The output of these threads also won't be shared publicly as I'm not happy with duplicate / shadow threads on the forums.

Apologies to those that are not admin and found it useful, and thank you to all the non-staff members that have historically contributed to the indef ban process. Going forward please report evidence / concerns to an admin who can collate and post it as part of their votes on ban requests.

  • I've locked this as the suggest itself has been implemented. Happy as always to pick up further suggestions to enhance the process that doesn't involve duplicating / shadowing data. There was going to be some work ongoing to streamline the process, but this will achieve the same end result with far less work.
