  • What are some of the more ridiculous "Microsoft" things in Windows?

Firstly, this is apparently the only place to change what the power button on your PC does

The fact that the "new" Windows 11 explorer menu is literally just an overlay that isn't even lined up correctly

The fact that the Fonts folder looks like this

This god awful Group Policy menu

Windows XP UI in Group Policy

This dialog box still exists even in Windows 11

What ridiculous UI things have you seen in Windows?

  • Most of those are for compatibility reasons with legacy programs. The control panel fonts screen was depreciated years ago, you're supposed to do it from settings now. But I do definitely think Microsoft should add a power button options menu to settings.

    • The Offline Web Pages located in the Windows folder still uses the icon dating all the way back to the Windows 9x days

  •   Telesphoreo i took one glance and saw group policy and that was it which could be avoided by the avg consumer because they probably will not join an AD.

i think the other things are fine except the power button options - they should be placed in other spots too.

as for the fonts and the powershall dialog - don’t fix what isn’t broken

@'FT ' when you’ve just configured windows, the volume is at 100% by default.

This must have been changed by somebody. I remember the default volume was 67% (I guess they wanted the volume to be at 2/3).

I will say this has a number of actual pretty valid uses and is super useful in a lot of powershell scripting, mostly though where you're connecting to external services.

I am surprised though they haven't switched the UI over to the same as they use now for network shares / similar.

  • @'Ryan' the dialog box would have actually been fine it's just the XP theme and administrator icon. those could definitely be changed no problem since they're just images. yeah it wouldn't be consistent with the new settings but there's already like 37 ways to domain join, each way being different

  •   Telesphoreo I think it's because (at least in Win 10) the user icon still is that.

It's also funny because that admin interface has far more control and granularity over the local users than they ever put into the main settings. Windows XP through to 7 they had a lot of it in the settings app, but Windows 10 they've stripped nearly all the options back and you have to go in there to do some of the cool stuff.

  • @'Ryan' that is true and very irritating. for some reason it looks like they even removed the most basic of changing whether a user is a standard user or administrator from settings. also rip the old profile pics you used to get, they just want you to use your Microsoft account for everything

  • I remember a bug in the authentication system if you created an account by logging in with your MS one. I think it had something to do with credentials not stored in the pc. To avoid being locked out in certain offline scenarios you had to create a local account, or turn your current one into that, then logging in MS again. I wonder if they ever fixed it.

  • @'Ryan' huh?
don’t remember that being a thing
they (intentionally ofc because thats what microsoft does nowadays) just made it really hard to find the option for an offline account/domain join
but im pretty sure you can still use a local account even with a working internet connection
