Allow people to advertise once per hour on Discord

  • Quote

(2e) Advertisement of any kind which are but not limited to Discord Links, Server hostnames, IP Addresses and such are not allowed. (Common used links such as Youtube, Twitter, Forum links are acceptable)

This suggestion was made in response to @'Ivan''s post. How come are you allowed to advertise in-game but not in Discord, it makes no sense. The way the rule is written implies that you can't advertise, period. Allow people to advertise on Discord once per hour to make it consistent with the rules we have now.

  • i'd like to hear the reasoning behind why advertising is allowed ingame but on on discord, ill make a decision on my vote after that

edit: now voting object, see ryan's reply to this message

  •   enchy It's always been frowned upon, however it's basically impossible to prevent people to advertise in game, so the 1-hour cooldown was added. Or at least it's how Ryan explained it in staff channels before the Purge.

Almost forgot: community guidelines don't allow advertisement on any platform, game server included. Or do they?

  •   enchy Because the reality is we don't really like advertising in game but it's been a legacy rule we never changed. Also the advertising rules are no longer the same since the new community guldienes and generally speaking network wide advertising is heavily frowned upon.

  •   Ivan Because advertising is pretty shitty for users and ultimately it takes players away from our community more often than not.

  • @'Ryan' It's not like when someone advertises some server that I will instantly forget about TotalFreedom. Sure a user might ditch out server, but they will just return back here. In addition, allowing advertising makes our server better because it promotes competition. Instead of banning advertising, make our server better so it's harder to steal members of the community.

  •   Ivan We (afaik) only have advertised on advertising sites, not random servers. Very different thing.

  •   characterslimits Given how poor our retention is, most players don't come back according to the metrics. Advertising isn't going to help that.

As I say advertising in game is no longer really permitted at all anyway as per the updated community guidelines.

  • I personally object. Discord has a lot of people who just go through disboard and use your server to advertise theirs. I know it's happened in game but it's even more common on discord.

Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.

  • To give some context, advertising other servers ingame was historically allowed once per 10 minutes. This was simply an exercise of the freedom concept: it's allowed as long as you don't harm others, and one message per 10 minutes is strict enough for that. Mark had another reason as well: communities that spawn off of TotalFreedom (i.e. not random spammers) are very likely to lead people back to us just by association, which is actually beneficial.

  • I Object. Steven's explanation gives a good reason why advertising was historically permitted, but TF is not a place to be advertising unrelated communities and it should not be allowed on any platforms other than in locations that could be designed with that purpose in mind.
