↩ RedEastWood You need to be careful when comparing internal and external (portable) drives. Internal drives are connected via SATA or NVMe, which are in almost all cases capable of maxing out the performance of your drive, meaning that the difference between an HDD and an SSD is really noticeable.
External drives on the other hand are connected via USB, which is notorious for making it difficult to figure out how fast your connector can go. That means that if you happen to have a slightly older version of USB, which can happen even on brand new computers as a cost-saving measure, you might not see any difference between an HDD and an SSD, simply because the bottleneck wasn't the drive, but the connector. I can only recommend an external SSD if you are going to use it (1) with a fairly new high-end computer (2) over USB-C.
In terms of lifespan, modern SSDs are no less reliable than HDDs. The main difference is that SSDs wear out over time when you write data to them, while HDDs have physical moving parts that can break.
