  • All the way back in April in my original thread about Windows XP with modern versions of Minecraft, I pondered what the performance would be like on physical hardware. A few months later as a bit of an experiment, I decided to see using a computer with hardware supported by Windows XP. After (painfully) getting MultiMC and Java to play nicely, I was able to launch the game. Better yet, I was able to connect to the server and actually play on it.

Surprisingly, it runs pretty decently, running around 40 FPS on average.

  • I spoke too soon. Windows XP appeared to run the game perfectly fine at a first glance, but things started going downhill fast once I opened an internet browser that (presumably) used hardware acceleration to grab a copy of OptiFine. It started with the internet browser displaying some rather amusing graphical fuckups.

From this point onward, the situation would only get worse. After spending a few minutes looking for the link (and fixing the graphical issues in the browser), I temporarily left it open in the background to check what was going on in-game. Nothing. Literally just the void. Assuming the game had just crashed, I went back to the browser with the intention to deal with the issue later. Boy was I surprised by what I saw.

As you can tell, the page is pretty fucked up, with chunks of the image appearing either corrupted or misplaced. While everything was scrambled like a bunch of puzzle pieces, the page was still perfectly usable. Surely it couldn't get any worse than this though, right?

Nope. It managed to get even worse. Somehow, the corruption I was seeing in the browser managed to leak into the Minecraft client itself, and boy was it flipping the fuck out. Artifacts everywhere, barely rendering anything, the whole sha-bang.

Eventually I wondered what the inventory screen looked like, so I opened the menu. Holy shit was it fucked up. I have literally never seen something so broken in the 7 years I have played on this server.

Within seconds of me taking that screenshot, the computer completely froze for a few moments, and then reverted to a 640x480 resolution with 16 colors. That's right, it got so fucked up that it managed to crash the graphics driver completely.

  •   Telesphoreo Yes, though I was able to recreate the issue to an extent (I couldn't get the driver to crash like it did before) by doing the same thing, leading to some... interesting results.

It is also worth noting that these issues don't come up unless I have the browser running in the background. Otherwise, it's fine.
