lyicx linux adventure

  • So...

i had a spur to reinstall windows. at the time i was dual booting 8.1 and 11. i had my last straw with 11 when it froze mine and my mates computer over running saints row the third remastered. it almost completely bricked our installs and fucked his monitor for a good minute. i am not certain it should be released next month

nevertheless, i opt'd in for 8.1 again on my big ass partition but i still had another 200GB partition. then it hit me, i should probably give linux a proper try now i've got a GPU that has drivers for it. i aint completely new to linux. i've tried this on my old laptop way back in 2017 and was lacking drivers for my GPU along with more recently handling the events server gave me some foundation when it came to terminal bollocks

it's been, a headache. a slow painful headache after several days and 3 distros now. ill give a short itinerary of this bollocks

    Manjaro

i first opted for manjaro with xfce. the actual distro itself i wont lie to you, i liked it. shit was snappy compared to the next distro i opt'd in for (more on that later) and i themed it to look akin to XP which i still think was quite surreal seeing modern shit with luna theme. issues started when i tried running games under wine. C&C runs into a direct sound error and wont make any sound no matter what i tried to fuck with when it came to winetricks. proton games wont fucking load up in general and i could never get timeshift to work with btrfs because someshit to do with the subvolume layouts not only having @ and @home which i've tried to sort out for the life of me. thus ultimately leaving me really frustrated. my head actually felt like it was fucking bleeding by that point. combine that with life shit and it was a really terrible day

FINALLY getting COD World at war TO RUN

i did a dumb thing, but this looked funny

a steam error IN FUCKING COMIC SANS

    Kubuntu

Kubuntu is a more simplified distro. basically from what i know its ubuntu with the KDE desktop. my god was this thing about as stable as this forum has been lately holy shit. system shit would crash, the desktop crashed. i managed to get my games running although there was severe lag spikes and took extremely long to set up. by that point i gave up trying to sort this shit out and moved on really which is a shame because i saw this distro with my own eyes and ran decently well

    Tiberium sun under lindog

    Pop OS

now we're here. i currently have pop os installed. my first impressions are not great at the moment. i dont like gnome and THERES NO FUCKING MINIMISE AND MAXIMISE BUTTONS. i also had to manually configure the bootloader to actually boot both pop and windog. but this runs more stable then kubuntu. i dunno if it beats manjaro yet but we'll see

    current desktop

i've tried grabbing btrfs-tools but some reason no install candidate. i need this for timeshift cus i wanna do btrfs system file backups

I'll update this as i go along with testing n shit with gaming epics or whatever. main goal is to try make it more viable

lyicx i dont like gnome and THERES NO FUCKING MINIMISE AND MAXIMISE BUTTONS

i actually much prefer gnome over xfce and others (apart from the added ram usage) because if it's look and customizability.
there are command-line options to readd the maximize/minimise buttons or if you're lazy some gnome extensions

browsing r/unixporn was a great way for me to find what I liked

reminded me of a sleeker version of mac os, it fits my blurple theme well.

linux is much easier to allow you to fit on your pink striped femboy programming socks, the only issue i really had was installing league of legends but i guess that's a blessing in disguise

edit: you can just edit the maximize/minimize buttons via the gnome extensions tweak tool which you can install but i forgot where, maybe popos store?

  •   lyicx that specifically used:
-pywal (sets up a color theme seen at the bottom of neofetch based off of your wallpaper)

    • i used both dracula themes and nordic themes for gnome
    • i used firefox with pywalfox to match the colors
    • i used blur my shell and transparent window (only issue for window transparency that you have to manually alt + scroll wheel do it)

many r/unixporn threads have how to recreate it in the description, just search by [gnome] and you'll be dandy

  • first order of buisness, im trying to setup BTRFS shit to backup the actual system files in the case that i end up bricking linux (which i have done before)

same shit happened in manjaro i dont know exactly what retarded ass shit im doing wrong here

  • Ah the classic "data" partition.
The horrible fact is that FAT32's still the only filesystem supported cross-platform because MS doesn't give free access to exFAT or NTFS
